What is agentic commerce and how is it different from ecommerce?
Answer
Agentic commerce uses AI systems to perform parts of the shopping process on behalf of consumers, including product research, comparison, recommendation and potentially transaction execution. Traditional ecommerce still assumes that the consumer actively navigates websites, marketplaces or apps. Agentic commerce allows the consumer to delegate some of those activities to software, which can increasingly influence the consideration set before the consumer encounters the brand directly.
Why this matters
Brands have spent decades optimizing websites, marketplaces, advertising and digital shelves for human shoppers. Agentic commerce introduces another decision-maker into that system.
What management should examine
- Which AI systems can currently discover the company's products?
- Whether product data is complete enough for machine comparison.
- How AI-originated traffic and transactions are measured.
- Which customer data remains available to the brand.
- Whether existing commerce systems can support agent-initiated transactions.
What good looks like
Management understands agentic commerce as a new commerce layer rather than another marketing tactic and has identified which existing capabilities need strengthening.
